Alta Vista
Alta Vista claims to index 150 million Web pages. There are both simple and advanced search forms. The advanced search may be used to do Boolean searching or to search by date. Alta Vista offers a number of options for searching so read the help pages for the best results.

Hotbot
HotBot claims to have indexed every word of 110 million documents. The expert option allows searches by date, media type, language and by location. Uses Inktomi search engines.

Northern Light
Indexes 129 million web pages. Search both world wide pages and special collections of magazines and other materials (you must pay for some of these). Results are organized into folders based on subject. With the power search option, you may search by date or by source.

Snap
Estimated to index 100 million web pages. If you use the search box on the first Snap page, you will get results from the Snap directory of reviewed sites with the option to search web pages given at the end of the list. If you want to search web pages only, use the Power Search option. This option can be used to search by media type, date, or language.

Excite
Indexes 55 million web pages. Enter search terms as words or phrases and Excite's Search Wizard will suggest other possibly relevant search terms. Searches may be refined by the use of + and -, and by the use of Boolean operators. Results may include not only web pages but news, Excite directory sites, and other related web sites.

Infoseek
Indexes 75 million web pages. Infoseek offers both simple and advanced searches. The advanced search is found by clicking on Search Options. Results list of the simple search includes both web sites and links to Infoseek directory sites. Search results list may be narrowed by using the "search within results" option, or sorted by date.

Lycos
Indexes 50 million web pages. Lycos has both simple and advanced search options. The search results list may be narrowed by using the "search these results" option. Searches may be filtered using the SearchGuard option.

MSN Search
Estimated to search 40 million web pages. There are both simple and advanced searches. The advanced search offers several features for narrowing searches such as language, place of origin, domain, and date modified. MSN uses Inktomi search engines.

Webcrawler
Indexes 2 million web pages. Web Crawler supports the use of + and and boolean searching. Results may be displayed as either titles or summaries.

Planet Search
Planet Search has limited search options, and the number of sites indexed is not given. On the plus side, the relevance rating is very easy to understand, and date each web site was indexed is included in the results list. It is possible to see a preview of the web sites listed in the results list before actually visiting them.

Magellan
The Magellan search engine searches two types of Web sites - rated and unrated. The rated sites have been reviewed and rated for "depth, ease of exploration, and net appeal". In addition, a green light at a rated site indicates that it contains no content intended for mature audiences. If you have nothing better to do with your time, you can use the Search Voyeur to see what real time searches are being performed on Magellan. I personally observed that a number of people could not spell.

Google
The order of the results list returned on a Google search is based on a complicated formula relating to the number of pages linked to the page in question. The pages with the most links from the most important sites are given top priority on the list.  Click on More Google to find help.
